Kevin Ollie SpeakerNBA journeyman and head coach Kevin Ollie beat all odds and led his UConn Huskies over the Kentucky Wildcats to claim the 2014 NCAA National Championship.

When UConn promoted Ollie to interim coach in Sept. 2012 after Jim Calhoun announced his retirement, the new coach inherited a program ineligible for the postseason and a roster decimated by early departures.

On April 5th, the Huskies defeated top-ranked Florida in the First Final Four national semifinal of the NCAA Tournament 63-53. The Huskies then defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 60-54 in the championship game on April 7th for Connecticut’s fourth NCAA men’s championship in fifteen years.

Retired NBA player and former teammate with the 76ers, Allen Iverson was on of the first to send a congratulatory message to University of Connecticut head coach Kevin Ollie following the Huskies’ impressive Final Four victory over the top-seeded Florida Gators on Saturday night.

“Congratulations K.O. this couldn’t happen to a better person,” Iverson wrote on his Instagram page. “I’m very excited about you being in the National Championship game.”

Iverson and Ollie played together for several years on the Philadelphia 76ers, most memorably in 2001 when the 76ers advanced to the NBA Finals.

A Christian speaker, Ollie has spoken about his faith, saying, “I try to be an example and live as Christ-like as I can.” Big things ahead for the 41 year old head coach of UConn.
