Rick-CarlisleDallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle returned to St. Lawrence University’s Burkman Gymnasium for the second time in five years to speak at the annual SLU boys and girls basketball camp on Monday, June 30. The camp is a five-day event that draws students from all across the northern part of the United States, and all the campers were eager to benefit from Coach Carlisle’s knowledge and experience.

At this year’s camp Carlisle said he had a desire to speak to students in a broader sense, inspiring them to excel “in all endeavors, not just basketball.”

“It means a lot for him to come to take time out of his day,” said Samantha Godfrey, one of the camp counselors.

Carlisle, a native of Lisbon, New York, has been a fixture at the SLU camp for over 40 years, and attended the camp when he was a kid.

“It’s great to see kids sitting where I was sitting,” said Carlisle. “It’s a reminder to me how fortunate i’ve been.”

Carlisle played in the NBA for five years before beginning his NBA coaching career in 1989. In 2001 he made his head coaching debut with the Detroit Pistons and went on to coach the Indiana Pacers from 2003-2007 before landing in Dallas in 2008. He was named NBA Coach of the Year in 2002 and is one of very few coaches to have won an NBA Championship as a player and as a head coach.
