Dale Jr SpeakerWinning his second Daytona 500, Dale Earnhardt Jr. simply couldn’t believe it. Neither could his fans, his team nor anyone else in the NASCAR world who has been waiting for this day for years. The race was 6 hours and 21 minutes and 40 seconds, becoming the longest rain delay in NASCAR history.

Earnhardt set off a wild celebration Sunday night by winning the Daytona 500 to snap a 55-race winless streak dating back to 2012. Earnhardt won the Daytona 500 in 2004, but had finished second in the race in three of the past four seasons. Though he is always a contender at Daytona, his second Daytona 500 victory was somewhat unexpected given his struggles to win races in recent years.

“This racecar was awesome,” said Earnhardt, who led a race-high 54 laps. “We showed ’em all night long how good a car we had, and it’s because these guys who put it together in the shop. That thing would do anything. We fought off battle after battle. We got a little help at the end from Jeff Gordon to get away on that restart and we tried to take care of it from there.”
