This Sunday, Dick Stanfel along with seven others were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It was a surprise to no one that Stanfel and the other seven men, including Kevin Greene and Orlando Pace, were inducted. All of the men inducted this year have a long list of personal and team accomplishments that most do not ever reach. Stanfel was inducted due in part to not only his great playing career but also his time as a coach, which he was widely regarded as one of the best offensive line coaches ever.
Dick Stanfel, the San Francisco, California native, served the United States Army before playing college football at the University of San Francisco. After his college career, Stanfel was selected in the second round in the 1951 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions and subsequently missed his rookie season due to injury. After his rookie season however, Stanfel played seven seasons in the NFL as an offensive guard. During his time with the Lions and Redskins, Stanfel made five Pro Bowls and was named all-pro five times as well. Stanfel was named the MVP of the 1953 Lions NFL Championship team and won another NFL Championship the previous year in 1952. Many believed that at the time of his retirement, he was easily the greatest offensive lineman to have played the game. Following his playing career Stanfel began coaching at Notre Dame and continued coaching until 1998. One of his most notorious coaching jobs was with the 1985 Chicago Bears when the Bears boasted one of the best running teams in the league that also helped lead them to the Super Bowl title. Mike Ditka stated after the Super Bowl victory that Stanfel was the best offensive line coach in the league and that when it came to teaching technique to lineman, Stanfel had no peer.
Dick Stanfel was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame this Sunday. The event was once again amazing and had a great showing of sports celebrities and legends of the game. The Hall of Fame induction, as always, gave fans the chance to appreciate the play of some recent legends of the game and in Dick Stanfel’s case some legends that laid the groundwork for today’s NFL.
