Former NBA Star Spud Webb attended and spoke at a steak & chicken luncheon earlier this month to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Bedford County. The event took place on May 2 at the Blue Ribbon Circle on the Celebration grounds, and Webb had an opportunity to share some of his life experiences with his fans, and talk about how hard he had to work to overcome so many obstacles. His adversity and passion for basketball is what drove him to his success, but he did explain that since retiring from the sport he has taken a backseat to the courts and has made golf his new sport. The funds raised were plentiful and the local Boys & Girls Club chapter were extremely grateful for everyone’s generosity.
The Dallas, Texas native has been inspired by basketball his entire life and started to play competitively by the time he was in the seventh grade. He made big strides in high school, and eventually was named the 1983 NJCAA- ALl-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association. Webb earned a scholarship to North Carolina State University and continued to excel at his sport. He entered the 1985 NFL Draft where he was picked in the fourth round as the 87th overall pick by the Detroit Pistons. Over his career, he also played with the Rhode Island Gulls, Atlanta Hawks, Sacramento Kings, Minnesota Timberwolves, Orlando Magic and Idaho Stampede.
Webb recently participated at a fundraising event for the local Boys & Girls Club of Bedford County where he got to share some of his life story and help the community raise funds for children.
