Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young was the guest speaker at Menlo School in Atherton on April 27 as part of their 100th anniversary Centennial Speaker Series. For nearly two hours, Young talked to the pre-teen kids about his glory days as a star football player and what it was like to win the 1995 Super Bowl. The talk was given at the Menlo Athletic Center, and aside from Young other big names appeared to the event such as the women’s Stanford basketball coach, popular wave surfer and photographer Ley Michelle, and Ted Robinson who has been the “voice” of the 49ers since 2009. All of the attendees were delighted to be given so much attention from people who had the kind of experiences that inspire them to take direction of their own lives and follow their dreams, even at their young ages
Young, a Salt Lake City native, spent 14 seasons in the NFL before retiring in 1999. Over his career he spent time playing for the San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the USFL team the Los Angeles Express. The former quarterback has countless awards and titles of recognition such as the 1983 Davey O’Brien Award winner, three Super Bowl wins, and seven Pro Bowl selections. In addition to that, he also has the most consecutive games throwing a touchdown pass and most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in the NFL. Young is also a National Adviser to ASCEND: A Humanitarian Alliance, which organizes and trips to Africa and South America to teach the less fortunate life skills and other useful things in education, health and technology.
Young showed up at the Menlo School late last month to interact with a group of kids who look up to professional athletes, and gave them some handy advice to follow as they continue on their journey of life.
