Gold medalist Mary Lou Retton spoke at this year’s Indiana State University’s Speaker Series on March 2nd right on the school’s campus. Retton spoke about how she got into gymnastics and about all the difficult things that she had to overcome in order to ensure success. The star athlete also shared some stories about the good times she had competing on behalf of herself, her team, and her country, all while providing words of encouragement to the audience to follow their dreams and do the same. Her speech was very motivating and it is one that the attendees of this speaker series will remember for years to come.
The five-time medal winner at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984 was the first female gymnast to win the all-around gold medal by beating out her opponent Ecaterina Szabo of Romania, and has been an icon for women’s athletics ever since. After her professional gymnastics career was over she went on to do a variety of things such as a few television and fitness product endorsements, motivational speeches, and commentating for NBC during the 1988 Olympics. She is now also on the Board of Governors of the Children’s Miracle Network and devotes a lot of her time to helping people find the inspiration to stay healthy and get a lot more active.
Retton spoke at the this year’s Indiana State University Speaker Series earlier this month, and she was a big hit with the audience and students who decided to go. Her stories and words of inspiration were priceless, and it was a great opportunity for the attendees to hear from one of the sport’s industry’s greatest.
