The New Athens, Illinois native played baseball in the MLB before moving on to be a manager. Herzog made his debut as an outfielder in April 1956 for the Washington Senators with whom he played with for two years until 1958. Over the next five years he bounced around between the Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and Detroit Tigers before switching gears and becoming a manager. The 1982 World Series champion managed the Texas Rangers, California Angels, Kansas City Royals, and St. Louis Cardinals before retiring in 1994 at the age of 63.
