Barry Larkin AppearanceHall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin continues to give back to the game that gave him so much. With a focus on developing the next generation of major league talent, Larkin led an MLB International Elite Camp in Sao Paolo, Brazil recently that included a competitive gathering of Brazil’s best 14- to 18-year old players, with a few players from Argentina and Peru also in the mix.

At the camp Larkin’s team of talented young ball players trained alongside major league prospects at the Confederation of Brazilian Baseball and Softball training grounds. LaTroy Hawkins, the closer for the Colorado Rockies, was also at the camp with Larkin and said that he wished American players could learn from the work ethic of the young Brazilians, who don’t have the finances and opportunities that are available in the United States.

During his 19 year career with the Cincinnati Reds Barry Larkin earned the right to call himself one of the best shortstops to ever play the game. However, due to his humble nature, he likely would not do so. A quiet, consistent player, he earned 12 All-Star appearances, 9 Silver Slugger Awards, 3 Gold Glove Awards, captured the 1995 National League MVP award, and led the Reds to the 1990 World Series Championship. In addition to having his number retired by the Reds, he was enshrined into the Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013.

Since his retirement Larkin has was as a special assistant to the GM in the Washington Nationals organization and has also served as a baseball analyst on the MLB Network and ESPN’s hit show Baseball Tonight. In the 2009 World Baseball Classic, Larkin was the Bench Coach for the United States and in 2013 he coached the Brazilian Baseball Federations team in their qualifiers for the World Baseball Classic. If there is one thing you can say about Larkin it is that he is a true baseball guy, which is the highest compliment one can pay a ball player.
