Jason Collins Booking AgentThe Brooklyn Nets have announced the signing of Jason Collins to a 10 day contract, making Collins the first openly gay NBA player in the history of the league. Collins, a 7’0 veteran center, will be available when the Nets take on the Lakers tonight in Los Angeles.

“The decision to sign Jason was a basketball decision,” Nets General Manager Billy King said in a statement. “We needed to increase our depth inside, and with his experience and size, we felt he was the right choice for a 10-day contract.”

Collins began his career with the Nets back in 2001 and played 7 seasons with the franchise before moving on to play for several teams from 2008 to 2013. After the 2013 season Collins made headlines when he became the first NBA player to come out publicly as being gay, and though this will be the first time he has stepped foot on an NBA court since his announcement, he has received overwhelming support, including from the commissioner of the league Adam Silver.

“Jason told us that his goal was to earn another contract with an NBA team,” Silver said in a statement released after Collin’s signing. “Today, I want to commend him on achieving his goal. I know everyone in the NBA family is excited for him and proud that our league fosters an inclusive and respectful environment.”

In his rookie year with the Nets Collins played a significant role in the team’s first ever NBA Finals berth in 2002. The next season he earned the job as the Nets starting center and helped lead the team back to the NBA Finals for a second consecutive season, earning him a $25 million contract extension through 2008. Prior to the end of the 2008 season he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. Over the course of the next five seasons he played with the Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Hawks, Celtics, and Wizards before becoming a free agent at the end of the 2013 season.

Collins, who played with Nets coach Jason Kidd during their consecutive NBA Finals runs in 2001-02 and 2002-03, will begin his 13th season in the NBA as an openly gay man, and perhaps even more importantly, he will be playing for a team and in a league that accepts him for who he truly is.
