Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett hosted the 13th Annual Play It Smart Football Camp in Princeton, New Jersey on June 6th. The one day clinic was a huge success and provided a full itinerary for high school students to learn about football skills and life skills on and off of the field. The coaches and volunteers who worked the camp put forth all their best efforts to show these kids what they could do to improve themselves for this coming school year after the summer months have passed. They also got a chance to play some non-contact football under these very experienced coaches and the mission was to teach them how to use what they learn to apply to their future academic and athletic careers.
Garrett is originally from the state of Pennsylvania, so going back to the East for this camp was likely a very familiar scene for him. The Princeton graduate was a player before a coach, as he signed on with the New Orleans Saints as a free agent back in 1989. He also played for the Cowboys, New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Miami Dolphins before retiring in 2004 to become the Dolphins’ coach in 2005. In 2007 he moved to Texas to become the Offensive Coordinator for the Cowboys before taking on the role as head coach in 2010 which he still is today.
Garrett got to go back East this summer to teach some local high school kids all about strength of the mind and body that would be able to help them out in sports and their futures all together. It was a great experience for everyone, and hopefully the coach will find more time in his off season to do it again sometime.
