Kemba Walker

Only one year removed from his dream-come-true 9th-overall selection in the 2011 NBA Draft, Charlotte Bobcats guard Kemba Walker will return to NYC to host a 2012 Draft Night party.  Thursday evening, Walker will host “NBA Draft Night Experience” at an invitation-only event atop the rooftop of the Yotel Hotel on 10th Ave in Manhattan.

Walker had a decent season (statistically) for the woeful Bobcats, averaging 12.1 PPG and 4.4 APG.  He became only the third player in franchise history to record a triple double, with a 20 PTS, 11 AST and 10 REB performance against the Washington Wizards in January.

An incredible college player for UConn, I don’t think I’ll ever forget Walker’s memorable performance in the 2011 Big East Tournament, where he led the Huskies to five wins in five days to claim the league title.  No team had ever done that before.  He scored 130 points in those five victories and in the semi-final game against Pitt, Walker hit the game winning shot as time expired.

Walker was the first player from his draft class to have signed with Under Armour.  With the knowledge that it’s such a short window of opportunity for pro basketball earnings, he seems keen on marketing himself, taking part in events like the NBA Draft Night Experience.  He’s well-spoken and a decent interview.  I anticipate Under Armour steps up it’s endorsement campaign of Walker and begins marketing the 6’1″ point guard with its brand a bit more in the immediate future.  I doubt most folks would know that Walker is sponsored by the Nike and adidas competitor.  Perhaps that could change if he improves as a second-year player in the NBA.
