Duke University and USA Men’s National Basketball Team coach Mike Krzyzewski, also known as “Coach K”, has been announced as Duke University’s 2016 commencement speaker this spring. The graduation ceremony will take place in Wallace Wade Stadium and will be open to the public for anyone who would like to attend. Duke President Richard Brodhead made the statement that when they choose a commencement speaker, they look for someone who is entertaining, informative, and has achieved a lot in their lives to motivate the newest class of graduating seniors. Not only is Krzyzewski an icon around campus for being associated with the Blue Devil basketball team, but he is nationally recognized for his 12 Final Four appearances and his induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.
The Chicago native went to high school in his hometown and then continued on to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York from 1966 to 1969 where he was a basketball player. From 1969 to 1974 he served in the U.S. Army and then came back to American soil to be the assistant coach of the University of Indiana. After two years of that he coached for five years for the Army’s college basketball team before taking his current position at Duke which began in 1980. In addition to that, he joined the United States Men’s National Basketball Team as an assistant coach in 1979 and became the head coach just eight years later in 1987, which he also still coaches today.
Coach K will be this year’s commencement speaker for Duke University where he should be a familiar face to just about everyone in the stands and on the stage. He will no doubt have an excellent speech, as it is bound to be full of insight and interesting stories.
