Barry BondsBarry Bonds is back at San Francisco Giants spring training camp, but this time he is not attending as a player. On Monday, March 11, Bonds returned to the Giants, in uniform, to serve as a roving hitting instructor the the team for the week. Though he is excited to serve in his new role, he has not ruled out returning to the team in a greater instructional role in the future.

“I’m more nervous at this time than when I was playing, because as a player, it was only my mind, me,” Bonds said, addressing several dozen reporters. “Now I’m trying to put that knowledge into other players’ minds. I’m a little more nervous being on this side than that side. Hopefully I can just bring some good value to the ball club. Hopefully, I can bring value to these guys and then let Bochy see how I do.”

Bonds’ appearance with the team was his first since retiring from the game in 2007. During his career he set MLB records with 762 career home runs, 73 home runs in a season, 2,558 career walks, and 688 career intentional walks. His impressive resume also includes 14 All-Star selections, eight Gold Glove Awards, 12 Silver Slugger Awards, seven NL MVP Awards, and three NL Hank Aaron Awards. Though Bonds’ image has taken a hit over the years, he is excited about his new role with the Giants and the opportunity to contribute to the team’s success in the future.
