Booking-Jason-CollinsThe past several years, more and more retired athletes have been openly revealing that they are gay. While many have been surprised by the announcement, many have embraced these former athletes for having the strength to come out to the public. The strength of these athletes paved the way for the announcement this morning by NBA Center Jason Collins to reveal he is gay. With this announcement, Jason Collins becomes the first active athlete to reveal he is gay.

Collins made the announcement in a first-person essay for Sports Illustrated that appeared online Monday. Collins is a free agent who finished this past season with the Washington Wizards. He wants to continue his career.

“I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay,” Collins wrote in the first paragraph of the story that will run in the May 6 issue. It is co-written with Franz Lidz.

Shortly after the announcement, many of his former teammates and opponents took to Twitter to support his decision to come out. Players and celebrities like Kobe Bryant, Bill Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, Russell Simmons, Bill Simmons, and several others tweeted how courageous it was for him to come out.

NBA commissioner David Stern said in a statement: “Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue.”

Look for Jason Collins to be making appearances and speaking engagements across the country telling his story.
