American long-distance runner and Olympian Shalane Flanagan was the first American woman to win the NYC Marathon in 40 years, and it all happened on Sunday, November 5. Her unofficial time for completing the race was 2 hours, 26 minutes and 53 seconds, just about a minute faster than here closeby opponent, Mary Keitany. Since 1977, no other American woman has been able to clinch the major marathon victory, and it is also one of the first big wins for Flanagan as well. The 36-year-old cried as she crossed the finish line and told reporters that the feeling during the moment of winning was simply “indescribable” and that she needed a few minutes to soak up the win. Flanagan’s first time in the New York Marathon was in 2010 where she took second place but hasn’t run in the race again until now.
The Boulder, Colorado-born runner spent the majority of her childhood in Marblehead, Massachusetts where she attended the local high school there and became interested in cross country and track. In addition to that, she also played soccer and participated on the swimming team to stay active. Flanagan attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she won several national cross country titles between 2002 and 2003, becoming the first individual champion in the sport in Tar Heel history. In addition to that, she represented the USA at the 2008 Beijing summer Olympics where she took the silver medal in the 10,000-meter race. Her win at this year’s New York City Marathon is the only first place and gold medal that she has ever earned, however, she also has three bronze medals from various World Cross Country Championship.s
Flanagan has broken a big record for the USA at the 2017 New York City Marathon where she has just become the first woman representing the United States to win the race since 1977.
