Olympic gold medalist Misty May, Olympic silver medalist in water polo Tony Azevedo, and former NFL head coach for the New York Giants Jim Fassel spoke at the Long Beach Century Club Meeting last month for its annual final meeting of the year at the Boathouse on the Bay. The Century Club has not only raised and donated over $100,000 to middle school, high school, Long Beach State and Long Beach City College athletics this year, but they have also shown a lot of community support for the participants too. May, Azevedo, and Fassel took the stage to each share their own stories of overcoming difficulties and how athletics have helped them persevere in their lives. All of them had something unique and memorable to bring to this event.
The Los Angeles native nicknamed “The Turtle” played volleyball for the Long Beach State 49ers of California State University for four years between 1995-1999 where she helped her team win two state championships. May-Treanor went on to compete in the Athens, Beijing, and London Summer Olympics to bring home the gold medal each time. She also played for the United States in the Beach Volleyball World Championships and won gold three times and silver once, so needless to say she is a big deal in the sport and widely recognized. Azevedo is a Brazilian-born American who is widely recognized for his athletics in the pool. He was on the Stanford University water polo team and won the silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympic games, as well as the gold in the 2011 Guadalajara games. Fassel is deeply rooted in California as he graduated from Anaheim High School and attended Fullerton College, USC, and Long Beach State. He is most recognized for being the coach of the New York Giants from 1997 to 2003.
May, Azevedo, and Fassel were the speakers at this year’s Long Beach Century Club Meeting that happened earlier this summer in June.
