Rowdy_GainesUS Olympic swimming gold medalist Rowdy Gaines spoke to students at Tioga High School and Scott M. Brame Middle School in Rapides Parish, Louisiana on November 4. He spent the day speaking to students about commitment, standing up against bullying, and of course, swimming. One of the key messages that Gaines wanted to get across the to the kids is that it is never too late to find what you are good at and commit to being successful at it. “Don’t ever let anyone tell you it’s too late for you,” he said. “I’m proof. I did not begin swimming competitively until I was 17 years old. I failed in five sports before that.”

“The messages are so many because kids need a lot of messages, unfortunately,” said Gaines. “My main message is to never give up on your dreams. Gaines still competes as a master swimmer, and also took the time to speak with swimmers at Pineville High and Alexandria Senior High Monday afternoon.

Gaines broke 25 world records in his career and won gold medals in the 100m freestyle and as a part of the 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley relay teams in the 1984 Olympic Games. He said that he gave his medals to his parents and coach, all of who helped him get to the olympics.
