Stephanie RiceOlympic gold medalist and Australian swimming legend Stephanie Rice has announced her retirement from competitive swimming. At just 25, Rice’s decision to leave the sport that she has dominated over the years was a bit of a shock, but nonetheless fans have shown support for her decision.

Confirming her retirement via an emotional video clip on YouTube and on her website on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., rice charted the highs and lows of her journey and showed clips of some of her legendary performances before informing the world of her retirement. During the heartfelt video Rice also spoke about her poor performance at the 2012 London Olympics, which combined with multiple shoulder operations led to her decision to leave the sport.

“Not continuing my swimming career is sad,” said Rice. “I definitely feel like I’m losing a part of myself but I’m really excited for what’s to come.”

A highly decorated swimmer, Rice took home three gold medals for Australia in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. During her career she also achieved huge success as a five time world record holder.

Though she did not perform up to her expectations in the 2012 London Olympics, Rice is still proud of her achievements in her career and is excited for the next chapter in her life. “It’s safe to say that’s the new goal for me, to prove myself out of the water, but to everyone who has supported me along an incredible journey I definitely couldn’t have done it without you guys.” She also told fans that she had been in meetings all day and has “lots of exciting things to come.”
