Vanderbilt UnDerek Masoniversity head football coach Derek Mason spoke to students at Springfield Middle School in Springfield, Tennessee on Tuesday, May 6. During his speech to the kids he related to them and told them stories about when he was their age, shedding light on the fact that he was a very shy kid with a speech impediment. However, he told them that those things did not hold him back, and that nothing should hold them back because what they have in front of them is limitless.

“There are two types of people in the world,” said Mason. “The limitless and the limited, and it is totally up to you which group you fall into. If you want to be great, you can be. And if that’s what you choose, then be great every day. There are going to be obstacles in your life, you just have to go around those obstacles or you have to go through them. It’s one or the other because obstacles aren’t going to go away.”

In regards to the inspiration behind his appearance and his work with youth in the community, Mason says he feels like it is his duty to give back and influence the next generation.

“I feel like we have a duty to pay it forward and hopefully we can touch a few lives while we’re here,” Mason said. “This is a good group of kids and this is a good comity, and anytime we have a chance to deliver a positive message from someone they consider to be a role model then that’s what we need to do.”

After his speech Mason promised to give everyone in attendance a ticket to a game this upcoming season.
