Indiana Fever forward Tamika Catchings was the keynote speaker for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Home Team Banquet that happened on April 21st at the Horizon Convention Center. It was a fantastic overall event as Catchings made time to sign autographs for her fans and talk with kids about being able to achieve their dreams with lots of hard work. There was also a very nice casual tone to it, as many of the attendees got to listen to music, chat with one another, and top it all off with a great motivational speech by Catchings. About 833 people attending this year’s team banquet which was an amazing number for the audience, and not a peep was heard while Catchings talked about her life and love for basketball.
The Stratford, New Jersey native was born with the gift of height which immediately made her a great candidate for being on a basketball team. During her high school years she was a star player on her school’s team, which eventually helped her land a spot on the roster for the University of Tennessee’s team between 1997 and 2001. She was drafted in the 2001 WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever as the 3rd all around pick and has been with the team ever since then. Although, she has taken leaves of absence to play for other teams overseas such as Russia’s Spartek Moscow, Turkey’s Galatasaray, and the Polish team Lotos VBW Clima Gdynia.
Catchings made a great speech for this year’s team banquet that was hosted by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes earlier this month at the Horizon Convention Center. Not only did she capture the audience’s attention completely, but she became a new hero for many little girls who attended.
