Buzz Williams Biography
Brent Buzz Williams is the head coach of the men's basketball team of Marquette University. Williams took over as the school's 16th head basketball coach on April 7, 2008, following Tom Crean's departure to Indiana University. He served as head men's basketball coach at the University of New Orleans during the 2006-2007 season, and as an assistant coach at Texas A&M, Colorado State, Northwestern State, Texas A&M Kingsville and The University of Texas at Arlington. Williams signed a six-year contract with Marquette University for an undisclosed annual salary.
Williams grew up in Van Alstyne, Texas. He earned a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from Oklahoma City University in 1994 and a Masters in the same field at Texas A&M-Kingsville in 1999. Williams and his wife, Corey Norman, have two daughters (Addyson & Zera) and two sons (Calvin & Mason).
He coached Marquette to a 2510 record in the 200809 season, where they lost to the Missouri Tigers in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
During the 2010 season, Williams gained national attention for his dancing following a dunk by Marquette player Darius Johnson-Odom.
He coached Marquette to a 2212 record in the 200910 season, which ended with a close loss to the 11th-seeded Washington Huskies in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
During the 2010-11 campaign, Williams led the Golden Eagles back to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2003. His team went 2215 including a 99 Big East record. They lost in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Big East Men's Basketball Tournament to Louisville. They received an at-large bid in the 2011 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament where they defeated Xavier in the second round and Syracuse in the third round to advance to the Sweet Sixteen where they were defeated by North Carolina.
Williams received his nickname while attending Navarro College. He buzzed around the men's basketball team so often the coach gave him the nickname.
