Nomar Garciaparra Biography

MLB veteran, Nomar Garciaparra was born July 23, 1973, inWhittier, California and is a former Major League Baseball player and currentESPN analyst. After playing parts of 9 seasons as an All-Star shortstop for theBoston Red Sox, he played third base, first base, and designated hitter for theOakland Athletics, first base and third base for the Los Angeles Dodgers, andshortstop and third base for the Chicago Cubs. He is one of 13 players in MajorLeague history to hit two grand slams during a single game, and the only playerto achieve the feat at his home stadium.

He finished with 35 home runs and 122 RBI in 1998, and placed as the runner-upfor AL MVP. Garciaparra then led the American League in batting average for thenext two years, hitting .357 in 1999 and .372 in 2000, finishing in the top tenin MVP voting both years. He is one of the few right-handed batters to win consecutivebatting titles, and the first since Joe DiMaggio. He hit safely and scored arun in the first five games of his post-season career (199899), and is joinedby Ian Kinsler (2010) as the only other player to start his post-season careerin that manner.

Garciaparra is a six-time All-Star (1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2006).
