Tim Leary Biography

Tim Leary (born December 23, 1958 in Santa Monica, CA), is a former Major League Baseball right-handed pitcher, who played 13 years in the Majors, including 1988, when he was an integral member of the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers, alongside teammates Orel Hershiser, Fernando Valenzuela, and Kirk Gibson.

Leary attended UCLA, where he achieved success both on and off the field as the only UCLA Bruin baseball player to be first team All-American and first team Academic All-American. In1978, he helped lead the USA Amateur Team to the silver medal in the World Cup played in Italy. He was also a member of the 1979 Pan Am Team.

Leary was selected by the New York Mets, as the second overall pick of the 1979 Major League Baseball Draft. He went 15-8 with a 2.76 ERA and 138 strikeouts for the Jackson Mets in his first professional season, prompting the Mets to make the controversial decision to bring him all the way to the majors for his second season. Making his major league debut on April 12, 1981, Leary faced just seven batters, before leaving the game after just two innings with a strained elbow. Leary suffered a second injury, a pinched nerve in his shoulder, and was shut down for the entire 1982 season. He was eventually traded to the Brewers in 1985.

In 1987, after a stint with the Brewers, Leary was traded to Los Angeles Dodgers. Coming back from years of adversity due to injuries and struggles on the field, Leary had a breakthrough year with the Dodgers in 1988. He finished the season second on his team behind Cy Young Award winner Orel Hershiser in wins (17), ERA (2.91), shutouts (6), complete games (9) and innings pitched (228.2), while leading his club with 180 strikeouts. In the 1988 World Series against the Oakland Athletics, Leary was used out of the bullpen by manager Tommy Lasorda. His three innings of masterful scoreless work allowed the Dodgers to come back from a 4-2 deficit in game one, with Kirk Gibson's historic homerun. Leary also appeared in game three of the '88 World Series, allowing only one run in 3.2 innings. The Dodgers won the 1988 World Series and Leary remains one of the unsung heroes of that Championship season.

Following the Dodgers' World Series victory, Leary was named the National League Comeback Player of the Year in 1988 for his regular season performance. Leary also received the prestigious National League Silver Slugger award pitcher in 1988, which is given to the best hitting pitcher in the league, when he batted .269 with nine runs batted in and thirteen successful sacrifice bunts. Leary finished up his career as a member of the Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, and Texas Rangers.

Leary was inducted into the UCLA Bruins Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991, while he was a member of the New York Yankees. He is only the third baseball player ever inducted into UCLA's Hall of Fame, along with the great Jackie Robinson. Additionally, Tim and Jackie are the only two UCLA Bruins to have won a World Championship with the Dodgers.

Shortly after his retirement, Leary Coached UCLA's Baseball team from 1997-2000 and again in 2004. He also coached at Loyola Marymount University. Leary is currently an active member of the Dodgers Alumni League, participating in numerous events and activities at Dodger Stadium and throughout the community including personal appearances, speaking engagements, baseball clinics, and various community-based fundraising activities. He serves as a radio guest on Dodger Talk, sharing his baseball experiences and expertise. Leary also continues to coach and teach pitching to youth through high school kids, helping the next generation of players, by offering lessons from a World Champion.
