Former NFL quarterback Philadelphia Eagles Don McPherson spoke at the screening of the film “The Mask You Live In”, which is a documentary that depicts how students struggle with the confining nature of masculinity. The event was organized by the Elliott School of International Affairs and was held in the Smith Center Colonials Club in the Washington D.C. area. Along with the showing of the film, there was also a discussion, a first of its kind at George Washington University, which allowed the viewers to get together and talk about what they felt towards this topic. McPherson talked about how both men and women need to work together on not allowing toxic masculinity have a big role in today’s culture and society. Overall, it was an exciting event for the 200 students who got to attend.
The Brooklyn, New York native got his stardom for the sport during his college years while he was attending Syracuse University, and he was the runner-up to the 1987 Heisman Trophy award. In 1988 McPherson was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles and then played for Houston Oilers before going into the Canadian Football League. In 1994 McPherson retired from the sport and went on to become part of Northeastern University’s staff at their Center for the Study of Sport in Society. He, later on, became the executive director of the Sports Leadership Institute at Adelphi University.

Former NL MVP George Foster was the keynote speaker for the Amsterdam Baseball/Mohawks Baseball Hall of Fame. Four new inductees were honored at this year’s dinner event that happened on February 3rd at St. Mary’s Institute and over 350 guests attended, making the function bigger than ever. The Tuscaloosa, Alabama native started playing baseball at a very young age and eventually was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the third round of the 1968 Major League Baseball draft. He stayed with the Giants for two years before being traded to the Cincinnati Reds, where he was on their roster for an entire decade. Foster then went to play for the New York Mets for four years and did a very brief stint with the Chicago White Sox before retiring in 1986. In all the years of his career, Foster was a five-time All-Star player, a two-time World Series Champion and a Silver Slugger Award.

Nash is an eight-time NBA All-Star has been playing basketball professionally for 19 years now and did two terms with the Phoenix Suns. In addition to having a career as a basketball player, he is also the co-owner of the professional MLS soccer team, the Vancouver Whitecaps. Nash was also named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2006 and played for Canada in two FIBA tournaments. The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player is a Canadian himself, although he was born in South Africa to British parents.
These two players will be part of a larger group this year for the Basketball Hall of Fame as they join their Class of 2018 in their nominations. It will be great to see Nash and Kidd recognized for all their talents and hard work, as they are legends of their sport.

Over his 12 year career, he played 799 NHL games and scored 152 goals and had 311 assists. Other than the Maple Leafs, Iafrate also played for the Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, and San Jose Sharks. These days, he is the lead consultant for shooting and hockey sticks for the Columbus Blue Jackets team.
